Developers are continually pushing the price of land up, as the potential to build blocks of flats or large houses determines the potential resale value and therefore the market value of the land. This generally pushes any small bits of land financially out of the reach of anyone wanting to build their own home at an affordable rate.

The government is proposing large scale housing developments across the UK and if it is possible to assign a small percentage to self build, it would help in providing a solution to the lack of sustainable and affordable housing.
